If Dogs loved us the way we love them

This post might hurt some people. I apologise in advance. I was just thinking random things today when, suddenly, a specific scenario came up absolutely clear in my head - to be in a house that has a lot of comforts, but you cannot see another human being. You live in a loving family of dogs whose language you understand, but maybe 1-2 other humans, or maybe none.

Your only chance of seeing another humans is the evening "walk".

On the flip side, life looked good - imagine not having to do a day of work your entire life, and actually dying of old age!

Would I want a life like that?

This is what gave birth to this piece - What if dogs loved us the way we love them? This is neither a censure nor a platitude - just a flight of fancy.

If dogs loved us

The way we love them

We would not live in houses

But in a den, or in a pack,

And they would love us so!

Small houses would be made

In a corner of the den,

For pets to live in peace

The ‘human house’ would have a bed

And a food bowl, please.

And oh! They would love us so!

We would be told

Where we could go

What we could touch,

In the main den.

We would be scolded (oh, of course),

Or, even ousted like hen.

But, Oh! They would love us so!

We would see dogs around us

But nary a human face

But once a day

They would take us

To see our human mates.

“Don’t get too excited”

We would be warned,

And if we did,

Be torn apart.

And oh! They would love us so!

We would be taken from our moms

While still bottle feeding

And adjusted in loving homes

With cute baths for preening.

Given names that ‘parents’ like

And collars, leashes, jackets, Oh!

They would love us so!

We would eat what they eat, of course,

But adjusted for our species

Toilets would always be open,

No clothes, so no creases!

And oh! They would love us so!

There would be needles,

because, everyone knows

Diseases that humans carry!

As far as mating goes

We could breed, but not marry.

And oh! They would love us so!

There would be sterilization, of course,

Because, as everyone knows

Humans are aggressive

In ways best left untold.

And oh! They would love us so!

All in all, I think what matters

Is the love that we find

In rich dens of our parents

Who are so very kind.

There would be no mugging,

No human crime to deal with

We would all die of old age

And jobs would be a myth.

We would be mischief makers

And they would make memes!

We would be part of stories,

And even of dreams!

And oh! They would love us so!
