@how do we know...This is a good issue you have raised...but I think there are some reasons behind it...
What I have observed about the crowd/mob that:
*firstly they always move towards the place where there is already a large crowd...They can't decide their own way...
*secondly Indian system is so pathetic that no-one wants to get into the trouble of being an eye-witness in any murder case...believe me now-a-days it has been a trouble...
*and last but not the least...typical human tendency...trying to get something or being a part of that thing which is a bit spicy(especially spicy news)... :-|

because ever since we grow up we are in the play safe tendency... this is buttressed by the way we are groomed as kids...
some time back there was a study on Readers Digest which put our nation way down in social etiquette list... there was an uproar in the media about it.. deep down most of us know that it was not way off the mark
I guess because glamour sells and common is too common to pay attention to..

i agree that there are lots of problems facing our society that need attention. however, this thing about curbing one's freedom of expression is slowly but steadily getting out of our hands, and needs a voice too, don't you think?
