We finally have the DVD of Maachis(the film) at home... got it as a wonderful gift recently, which made the possession dearer.

You'll remember, this was a Gulzar movie released in the previous decade.
It was about the terrorism problem in Punjab.

The leads were Om Puri, Tabu, Chandradhur Singh and others, incl. Jimmy Shergill.

Things I remember from the film:

Song snippet:
अखियों मे बैठा था, अखियों से उठ के,
जाने किस देस गया...

He sat in my eyes,
God knows where he went from there..

What i love about this line is the pain of living through the fact that someone who practically shared your days, just goes away one day,and you never see him again.

Dialogues from the film: (ओम पुरी)

(Referring to the fact that an unawakened population cannot bring about a revolution or reform movement. Classic Gulzar, the best possible way of saying it. )

I wish more people were capable of understanding these lines... I wonder if all those people around me (when I was a kid) who saw the movie and found it not quite entertaining understood Anything! :(

Its one of my fav. movies and the music was superb too :) Tabu is a very talented actress.

What I like about Gulzar is..he says something so deep and meaningful but in simple and few words :)

Stay Beautiful...!

Love the music of the film.
"Chappa Chappa" makes me wanna get up and dance and shed tears, all at the same time.

I forgot all abt the movie, after reading this think i should watch it again.

How do we know said...

Hi Neihal: I agree... all Gulzar movies that i have seen so far are for keeps. There are others.. Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee..either they don't make them like that any more, or we are just not discerning enough..

Hi red soul: :-) Some of us do, and some of us don't...

Hi Dharma: I used to be a big time fan and have read, methinks, a lot of what has been published of his. But he continues to surprise.
U must watch the movie. I personall think that of all his roles, the best is as a filmmaker.. Have u seen an old film called Mere Apne? That movie, like maachis haunts me though i saw it over 13 years ago.

Hi Sugarlips: true, i like that about Javed Akhtar and abt Gulzar.

Hi smi: that is so well put.. makes u wnt to dance and cry at the same time.

Hi chiya: it will be a treat. I have already watched it 4 times since we got the DVD.

माचिस मुझे भी बहुत अच्छी लगती है।
गुलजार की यही खूबी है जो वो छोटे छोटे संवादों में बड़ी बड़ी बातें कह जाते हैं।
