Totiya Manmotiya by Rabbi Shergill

In Rabbi Shergill's first album was a song - Totiya Manmotiya.

What is this song about? Its a deeply stirring song, and one has heard it at least hundreds of times, and have a strong feeling that it is connected with something in our world, but can't put my finger on it. Does anyone know? can guess?

It is basically a folk song attached with a story that my mother and nani used to tell at bedtime.
Rabbi has given it a sufi coloring - and of ishq. See the symbolism, the pathos, the woman is telling the male not to go to a particular area cos there are enemies there. He doesn’t listen. It can be interpreted as a fauji going to war and being held back by the womenfolk, or a jind looking for the ultimate milaap with the Almighty.
“Ni main jaana othey" so that he can live with anakh (self respect), because his alhana (nest) has been usurped by the aliens.
The female then encounters the injured tota, and then he tells her to take care of his bacchra ( ਬੱਚੜਾ ) , child.
The pathos of woman, who feels that first she lost the man, then she is to lose the (male) child too cos the tota has asked her to prepare the child to take his hisab ( revenge for his death). End of the song, she wants to fly away, from this cruel world, that takes toll on her family.
Hope I make sense !!!
