Punjabi Words that are not so popular any more

These are words that I heard at home, but are not in popular use any more. 

ਤਰਖਾਣ - तरखान - Tarkhaan - Carpenter 

ਬਜਾਜ - बजाज - Bajaj - Cloth Seller 

ਹੜ - हड़  - Hadd - Flood 

ਲਾਊਡੇ ਵੇਲੇ - लौडे वेले - Laude vele - Dawn

ਤਰਕਾਲਾਂ ਵੇਲੇ - तरकालां वेले - Tarkalaan Vele - Dusk 

ਮਾਹੀ/ ਮਾਹੀਵਾਲ -  माही/माहीवाल  Mahiwal / Mahi - Goatsherd / Shepherd / Cowherd 

Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Ihe and Sukhwinder Singh

Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Ihe and Soora so are the 2 Sikh hymns that mean a lot to me. 

When I first heard Sukhwinder's voice, I knew that this was the ONLY voice that would do justice to Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Ihe. 

And from there, it was a wait of more than a decade and a half. 

Finally, at a DD channel launch, Sukhwinder Singh sang Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Ihe. 

But it was not possible to get a recording of that event. We only heard it once on TV. 

And since then, I have looked for Deh Shiva bar mohe ihe and Soora so in Sukhwinder's voice. 

First, what the hymns mean: 

ਦੇਹ ਸਿਵਾ ਬਰ ਮੋਹਿ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਭ ਕਰਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਟਰੋਂ ॥

Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Ihe, Shubh Karman te Kabhoon na Taron

देह शिव बर मोहे इहे शुभ करमन ते कबहूँ न टरऔँ

O Lord! grant me this boon, that I may never falter in performing righteous actions.

न डरों और सौं जब जाए लड़ो, निश्चय कर अपनी जीत करो

Na Daro aur saun jab Jaaye laDo, Nishchay kar apni jeet karo ਨ ਡਰੋਂ ਅਰਿ ਸੋ ਜਬ ਜਾਇ ਲਰੋਂ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਕਰ ਅਪਨੀ ਜੀਤ ਕਰੋਂ ॥ When I go to fight my enemies, I may not be a bit intimidated by them and may certainly become victorious.

Aru sikh (teaching) haun apne hi man ko, ih lalach ho gur ko ucharo

अरु सिख हूँ अपने ही मन को, इह लालच हो गुर को उचरो, ਅਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਂ ਆਪਨੇ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਕੌ ਇਹ ਲਾਲਚ ਹਉ ਗੁਨ ਤਉ ਉਚਰੋਂ ॥ And I may inculcate my mind with a consistent craving that I may ever utter Your praises.

जब आयु की औध निधान बने अत ही रण में तब जूझ मरो

Jab aav kee audh nidhaan bane, at hee rann mein tab joojh maro ਜਬ ਆਵ ਕੀ ਅਉਧ ਨਿਦਾਨ ਬਨੈ ਅਤ ਹੀ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਤਬ ਜੂਝ ਮਰੋਂ ॥੨੩੧॥ When my lifespan comes to an end, then I may lay down my life fighting fiercely in the battlefield.

But i am recording this bcs this is the original tune of a Gurbani piece that includes - Shri Asipan kirpa tumri kar main na kahyo sab tohe bakhanyo.. sagal dwaar ko chhad ke gayo tuharo dwaar,..i will remember the full thing. But i never hear this tune any more. That gurbani was sung in our house to this tune.

Old Punjabi Folk Singers

When we think of old Punjabi singers, only Surinder Kaur Prakash Kaur come to mind. 

This post is a tribute to other Punjabi singers who laid the foundation of Punjabi music in the previous century. Most of their work is pure classic.

Malkit Singh shot to fame with more modern Punjabi. But he has sung a lot of traditional Punjabi.

Most ppl know Daler Mehndi as a pop Punjabi singer, which he was. But before that, in Patna Sahib, he also went through the tough training to be a Ragi - a singer of Raga based devotional songs of Sikhism.

Lohri Bolis for a daughter's first Lohri

A poet whom I respect a lot, Viky Arya ji, wrote a song in which a Punjabi girl is exhorting her mother to do Lohri for her. 

Then i realised, social change is effected much better by using simple things like Folk songs and idioms. 

So, I made a few bolis for the families of daughters who want to celebrate their first Lohri. 

मेरी पसंदीदा कवयित्री, विकि आर्य जी ने लोहड़ी पर एक बालिका का गीत लिखा, जो अपनी माँ से कह रही है कि माँ, मेरी भी पहली लोहड़ी मनाओ। 

गीत बेहद सुंदर था और अंतर्मन तक घुस गया। उसी गीत ने नशे में मैंने सोचा, कि लोक परिवर्तन का सबसे अच्छा ज़रिया हैं, लोक गीत, लोक कथाएँ, और लोकोक्तियाँ। 

लोहड़ी के दिन गिद्दा और भांगड़ा अनिवार्य हैं। पर लड़की के घर वाली लोहड़ी के लिए बोलियाँ कहाँ हैं? 

ये रही: 

नू मेरी ने कुड़ियां जम्मियाँ, मेरे घर वधाई 

संतो बंतो सारियां आइयां, रौनक डाडी लाई 

सारे पिंड नऊ लोहड़ी वंडी, किसे नऊ थुड़ न पाई,

My dil gave birth to daughters, in my house, happy tidings 

All my friends gathered to celebrate, and they made it a merry place 

I distributed LohDi goodies to the entire village, leaving no one unsatisfied.

This Boli uses a format that is only available in Punjabi folk music - that of gentle ribbing thru a Boli. In this boli, the singer says that Dadi only wants a grandson, can one buy a grandson from the market and bring it? 

Kalpana (Chawla) reached the vicinity of the moon while Dadi, with her "lofty" thoughts, is still spreading out her cot in her own verandah. 

O Dadi, now stop this chant of Grandson, God has sent u Lakshmi. Get up and take a turn around the dance floor, your granddaughter is observing you.

Saadi jindaDi vi aidaan hi. O khet deeve varga hai, jinnu tak tak asi pale dee saari raat vargi jindadi katti jaane aan. khaure deeve ne saaDe layi kade balna vi hai ke nahi, par Poh di raat vargi jindaDi katti jaandi.

My bua used to use this one on me when I wanted to leave for school without eating. I now use it on the child. :)
